The US Army War College in Carlisle, Penn is the graduate school for generals-to-be. They created an acronym to describe the new world of war and the effects of terrorism. VUCA stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. After 9/11 The US Army War College informally changed their name to VUCA University.
This acronym also describes our feelings about business, education, health care and the economy. We are living in a VUCA world. And it’s not going to get any better.
Our current environment of uncertainty and change is not going to “blow over”. We won’t be going back to business as usual. Most of the old rules don’t apply now when people connections matter at least as much or more than physical structures and technology systems. Leaders of the future will have to master new skill sets that enable them to thrive in a VUCA world. They will have to be able to create a new culture, unlike anything we’ve seen before.
Culture is that invisible bond which ties the people of a community together. It is the intangible element that defines your organization and gives you a unique identity. In our global economy, the culture of your organization must transcend boundaries of diversity, geography, and time zones.
Who creates culture? You can’t program it into a computer, you can’t create it with corporate policies, you can’t force it into being. Culture depends on you and me…us. The success we achieve in business and in life will be directly proportionate to the “us” that forms the communities we create.
The leadership of any organization must be creating culture with intent, providing an organization with the unique personality that draws like-minded people to participate as employees, investors, and customers. Your organization must be more than the products and services you provide.
Culture is a key element of your success. Don’t leave it to chance. Remember it all depends on you, me…us. UMEUS Consulting. We can help.
